Going to view a 1997 V70 2.5 turbo AWD as a replacement car. What are the specific issues to look for? Did this model suffer any ETM issues, or is it the one to watch transfer box on? Any advice gratefully received.
I think that a '97 will pre-date the ETM problem, so I don't believe you'll have any worries there. For some reason something at the back of my mind says that an AWD of that vintage requires a bit of caution, and that there were a number of drive-related problems. I can't remember why, and I can't now find any reference in the current Parkers guide, or in the old printed copies that I'd kept from when I bought my fwd '97 V70 a few years ago. I don't want to be unfair to the AWD, but there is a tiny alarm bell ringing deep in the memory! I'd say it was worth a bit more research - and proceed with due caution! Jack
It was a dog. 210 mile round trip and wasted journey. The supposed full history consisted of a 3k + 10k service, 20k done at 29k, then nothing till 70k, which all are hand written dates and mileages without a stamp or invoice to back them up. All the door cards had cuts nicks and punctures in them, the load bay was scruffy and obviously used as a van. For it supposedly serviced in April, there wasn't any coolant just water in the system. It also had a misfire and I would say has had a head gasket go and a hastily and badly done repair. My dealer also advised to steer clear of the early AWD due to tyre tread depth sensitive transfer boxes. The 2000 on facelifted AWD had a haldex unit which is the one to go for.
------------------ - 98 m3, techno/anthrazit cloth, 124k and officially worthless - 89 m3, alpine/black 143k and officially old - 2000 323it, tiag/grey, 169k and officially boring
I've just agreed to buy an 1997 AWD. FVSH. I've read the notes about the tread on the tyres. IS this really something to worry about? I've no problem with rotating the wheels every 5K but what would I need to look for if there is an issue with the trans box? cheers Barch
